FUD is a disinformation strategy primarily used by marketing and sales professionals. The tactic is also used in the political and investing worlds.

The goal of FUD is to influence perception by disseminating negative, dubious, or false information. This information could be about a competitor’s product or company, or about a political rival.
FUD is often introduced “TO US” by others. They want to mislead us or influence some type of decision or action (how we purchase goods, vote, or invest, for example). We need to be sensitive to the news, advice, and information that we receive before making decisions.
Fear, uncertainty, and doubt can be used by others to manipulate us emotionally and prevent us from making objective decisions.
FUD can also be experienced “BY US” subconsciously and involuntarily. This type of fear, uncertainty, and doubt is self-inflicted.
By nature, our primary instinct is self-preservation, to protect ourselves from danger and to ensure our survival. As we experience life, we record all of the things that hurt us either physically or emotionally in our subconscious mind. This is where our beliefs, attitudes, and memories are stacked up.

Our subconscious mind recalls these painful experiences when we make decisions day-to-day and raises fear, uncertainty, and doubt to protect us from hurting ourselves again. Over time, our subconscious mind is “programmed” by our past experiences. We create a “comfort zone” of security and we generally stay within that zone.
Fear, uncertainty, and doubt can protect us from the physical dangers in life and help us from repeating the same mistakes over and over. It definitely has a useful purpose.
I believe that FUD is most dangerous when it causes us to stay in our comfort zone. We become afraid to try new things, take calculated risks, or meet and interact with new people.
Fear, uncertainty, and doubt can cause us to miss out on opportunities to grow our business, our wealth, or ourselves because new experiences are usually outside of our comfort zone.
“Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will.” – Suzy Kassem
Overcoming Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt
Fortunately, we have a conscious mind that is responsible for rationalizing and logical thinking. It is capable of planning, communicating, and making decisions voluntarily. We can use our conscious minds to control our day-to-day activities.
Don’t let FUD paralyze you and keep you from accomplishing your goals and dreams.
Face your fears head-on by planning to do the things you’re afraid to do
Address uncertainty by doing research and educating yourself
Overcome doubt by having faith and trusting your instincts
“The quality of your life is directly related to how much uncertainty you can comfortably handle.” – Tony Robbins
"Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy." – Dale Carnegie
